Biden’s hunger and nutrition goals confront November realities The White House conference on hunger, nutrition and health is happening as record food inflation is hitting Americans just a few weeks away from tough midterm elections for Democrats.

But with uncertainty over who will hold the gavel in Congress next year, it’s unclear if the administration will be able to see any legislation tackling those goals gain traction in the coming months and beyond.

“The critical question is: Is there going to be continued passion and commitment to actually implement the [White House] plan?” said Dariush Mozaffarian, a cardiologist and professor of nutrition at Tufts University who co-chaired an external task force that provided recommendations for the conference, along with chef and humanitarian José Andrés, who the White House has announced as a key speaker for the event.
Historically high food prices and a protracted baby formula food safety crisis — issues that have been easy targets for Republicans ahead of the election — have also dogged the administration in the lead-up to the conference.

By MICHAEL STRATFORD 09/26/2022 06:53 PM EDT President Joe Biden’s plan to cancel large amounts of outstanding student debt for tens of millions of Americans will cost the federal government roughly $400 billion, according to a new analysis released Monday by the Congressional Budget Office.
The report by the nonpartisan congressional budget scorekeeper is the first full, official cost estimate of Biden’s student debt plan issued by a government agency. And it adds new fuel to the contentious debate over whether the loan relief to tens of millions of borrowers is justified or an irresponsible use of taxpayer dollars.
The CBO analysis examined how Biden’s loan forgiveness program would reduce revenue to the government and how much that would cost the government over the lifetime of the loans, which can stretch out over 30 years. It concluded the cost would be about $400 billion.
The Biden administration’s further extension of the freeze on student loan payments through the end of 2022 is expected to cost about $20 billion, CBO said.

By KELLY GARRITY 09/26/2022 02:30 PM EDT President Joe Biden will host a state dinner for French President Emmanuel Macron in December, the White House announced Monday.
The dinner, scheduled for Dec. 1, will be the first state visit hosted by Biden after almost two years in office. The delay is in part a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, White House spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre said during a Monday briefing.
“Covid certainly has delayed many of the in-person events a president traditionally hosts at the White House,” Jean-Pierre said.
The visit from President Macron and his wife, Brigitte Macron, “will underscore the deep and enduring relationship between the United States and France, our oldest ally” Jean-Pierre said. “Our close relationship with France is founded on our shared democratic values, economic ties and defense and security cooperation. The leaders will discuss our continued close partnership on shared global challenges and areas of bilateral interest.”
